Guest Curator: Grace Aneiza Ali, Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
Un | Fixed Homeland brings together an inter-generational roster of thirteen emerging and established Guyanese artists who, via photography and photography-based art, examine the complex relationship to “homeland.” These artists explore how a “homeland” can be both fixed and unfixed, a constantly shifting idea and memory, and a physical place and a psychic space. The exhibition’s title reflects the emergence of the Caribbean diaspora in metropolitan cities around the world and speaks to what has become the defining global movement of the 21st century – migration.

CEPA Gallery, in collaboration with Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) and Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Arts Center, is pleased to present Revisitations to a Vacuum’s Nest, a selection of vintage photographs from VSW’s archives by legendary Japanese avant-gardist Eikoh Hosoe. The exhibition will take place from June 24 — August 27, 2016 throughout CEPA’s Flux and Passageway galleries. An opening reception will take place on Friday, June 24 from 7-10pm.

Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to present Viewpoints 2016, a juried exhibition by Studio Montclair. The exhibit will featured the work of 100 American and international artists.
The opening reception and award ceremony on Saturday, June 11th from 6 to 9pm, is expected to welcome hundreds of art lovers, collectors, curators, and participating artists.

Weekends May 7 through June 12, Creative Time and the Brooklyn Navy Yard will present Fly By Night, artist Duke Riley’s public artwork of unprecedented scale and beauty.Fly By Night will be Riley’s largest project to date.
Friday through Sunday evenings at dusk, a massive flock of pigeons will elegantly twirl, swoop, and glide above the East River, as Riley orchestrates a series of performances occurring regularly throughout late spring. At the call of a whistle, thousands of birds will emerge from their home in a grand, converted historic boat docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The pigeons will circle above the river as the sun sets over Manhattan, and small leg bands, historically used to carry messages, will be replaced with tiny LED lights, illuminating the sky in a transcendent union of public art and nature.

The Dapper Comes To The Walkers

Dapper Bruce LaFitte, formerly Bruce Davenport, Jr. was born in 1972 and grew up in the Lafitte Housing Projects in the 6th Ward. With the encouragement of his grandparents who raised him, he began to draw at the age of five as a means to entertain himself and document the world around him. Following Hurricane Katrina and the devastation to New Orleans and its schools, LaFitte felt compelled to honor the past glory of this unique band culture and celebrate those who are able to continue it. In his words, “The marching bands are a passion to me. I love the history and culture… My work serves as an illustrative reminder of an activity that not only encourages creative thought processing but also engages youth with the community and with each other. Using photographic documentation of these bands in action, I recreate their vibrant pageantry… hopefully leaving behind a sacred reminder of a vibrant part of my hometown’s identity.” LaFitte’s vivid color marker drawings provide detailed reenactments – the bands in precise number and formation and the multitude of spectators surrounding them.

LA><ART is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Yaron Michael Hakim. Hovering between abstraction and figuration, Hakim’s latest body of work builds upon his ongoing interest in ritual, history, place, architecture, wanderlust, and the sublime. The artist’s work draws upon his personal history, namely his peripatetic rootlessness and interstitial experience of global culture. His new paintings incorporate elements drawn from the Los Angeles city scape, indigenous textiles and patterns, remote islands printed in an atlas, and figures in vintage Playboy magazines, among other sources. Painted on used Dacron polyester sailcloth and pinned directly on to the wall, these paintings use materials that subtly suggest a hidden narrative of movement and utility.

Invisible Presence: Bling Memories

In her work, the Jamaica-born mixed-media artist Ebony G. Patterson recontextualizes gender norms and explores Jamaican dancehall culture. She creates highly entrancing, colorful pieces. Patterson represents the transformations of gender and body politics by blending tapestry, beading, sequins, crochet, and Internet-sourced images of violent murders. The resulting pieces seduce the viewer with mesmerizing, striking textures. “I’m hoping … to pull the viewer in to see further and raise questions about how we engage in the act of looking,” she has said. Patterson’s work thus elicits a civic awareness that raises the stakes for popular culture as a whole.

Opening This Week:
SF Camerawork presents V+M, a multi-channel video and sound installation by renowned video artist John Sanborn with music composed by Theresa Wong. Organized by Joseph De Mario, V+M is the first San Francisco exhibition of the artist’s work in 25 years. V+M will be on view at SF Camerawork from November 13 through December 3, 2015.
V+M retells the myth of Venus and Mars. Their story has fascinated poets and philosophers as a mythic example of the balance between opposing energies — beauty and brutality, order and magic, grace and strength. V+M goes beyond the heteronormative code in order to get to the source material for the balance of power in relationships, the nature of myth making, and the origins of desire.

This Friday, October 30th, CEPA’s E. Huron Street studio loft, will feature current exhibiting artists Gregory Halpern, Ahndraya Parlato, and Nicholas Muellner.
This meet & greet will take place from 7-9:00 pm and will feature a parlor discussion on the intersections between visual language and written language, as well as the reemergence of the book as a primary vessel for the photographic image. CEPA Gallery will be hosting this unique event in conjunction with Gregory Halpern and Ahndraya Parlato’s exhibition East of the Sun, West of the Moon and Nicholas Muellner’s exhibition The Nautiloid Heart, at CEPA’s studio loft in the Burns Building located in downtown Buffalo. Unlike the standard auditorium style symposiums often conducted around exhibitions, this gathering will be more casual in nature. Guests and speakers will be seated amongst each other in the intimate setting of CEPA’s private space overlooking downtown Buffalo.

Smack Mellon presents Karin Giusti’s monumental installation Honorem: Three Seasons at Black Forest Farm and Michael Kukla’s first large scale site-specific project Jeskyne.
Karin Giusti’s installation Honorem: Three Seasons at Black Forest Farm addresses the emotions of grief and mourning in the public and private sphere. Using sculpture and photography, Giusti captures memories of her life at a remote farmhouse with her late partner Stephen G. Schwarz, a firefighter and 9/11 First Responder.
Michael Kukla’s installation, Jeskyne (Czech for “cave”), also takes cues from the formidable effects of time and nature. Exploring the elasticity and permeability of an object’s surface, Kukla creates an immersive web of cellular forms blended seamlessly into the gallery’s architecture. Like large fossils, these hand sculpted monochromatic façades compress time into positive and negative space.

LAURA DAVIS: LEGACY OF LONELINESS

In Legacy of Loneliness Laura Davis responds to the history of female artists, herself included, working within the field of sculpture. The exhibit features a site-specific wall painting, two furniture based assemblage sculptures, a self portrait, and an installation of small wall works. Also shown for the first time are a series of Davis’ large graphite drawings on Stonehenge paper that layer the imagery found in such canon-establishing art anthologies such texts as Albert E. Elsen’s 1974 edition of Origins of Modern Sculpture, Pioneers and Premises.

CEPA is pleased to present East of the Sun, West of the Moon, an exhibition of photographs by 2014 Guggenheim Fellow Gregory Halpern and Ahndraya Parlato.
The photographs in this series were made on the Solstices and Equinoxes of 2012 and 2013. They were made wherever the artists happened to be—their home, travelling, or wherever they found themselves on those four days of the year. The images in the project are inspired, on the one hand, by the idea of transition, and on the other, by the ideas of stillness and balance. While photographing, Halpern and Parlato also thought loosely about time, about how time looks and feels—time of day, time of year, time in the sense of a lifespan. Not surprisingly, certain themes recurred—birth and death, transition and renewal, lightness and darkness. East of the Sun, West of the Moon, the title of which is borrowed from a Norwegian folk tale, is anchored by the idea of trying to rely on two continually shifting landmarks as navigational guides, how disorienting that idea is, and how it creates an elusive or impossible place.

Art in General presents The Echoes, a New Commission by Nino Chubinishvili aka Chubika in the Storefront Project Space. The exhibition is presented as part of the International Collaborations program in partnership with the Center for Contemporary Art, Tbilisi, Georgia, and will mark the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in the United States.
Integrating her diverse background in costuming and successful career as a fashion designer, Chubika’s artistic practice blends sculptural and theatrical elements with wearable utility. She maps the plasticity and expressive potentialities of unconventional materials onto familiar objects, distancing them from associations with passive consumption. The artist’s affective installations, sculptures, animations, and collaborative performances aim to transmit spiritual ideas at a subconscious level, where performative objects reveal hidden messages over time. Her work’s relationship to metaphor is an embodied and self-reflexive one, best absorbed subliminally by those who occupy the garments or installations.

Richmond-based, South African artist Siemon Allen studies the sustainability of the archive as a way to consider what the move towards digital music formats means for the accessibility of earlier analog forms, such as vinyl.
Second Street Gallery will host a large-scale installation of Allen’s extensive album curtain devoted to the history of South African music in the 20th and 21st centuries. This work is an extension of a project that Allen first installed in the Slave Lodge in Cape Town, and later presented in the Venice Biennial in 2011.This work has never been shown in the United States. It will have a sound component, project space, and reading room.

LAURA DAVIS: LEGACY OF LONELINESS

Laura Davis is a Chicago based artist whose work examines the intersection of craft, design and art by using display structures to conflate notions of value and context through sculpture, drawing and installation. Davis’ most recent solo exhibition, Histrionic Renovation, was a site-specific installation created for the Mies van der Rohe designed McCormick house at the Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, IL. She has been featured in many group exhibitions including Homebodies at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and Two Histories of the World (Part 2) at Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago. Her work has been written about in Art in America, the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Art 21 Blog, Art Slant and in 2013 Jason Foumberg selected her as a “Breakout Artist” for Newcity. Davis received her MFA from the University of Chicago in 2004, her BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1996 and teaches in the department of Contemporary Practices at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

MAP’s Program Advisory Committee (PAC) curates Young Blood, an annual exhibition of works by recent Baltimore-area Masters of Fine Art graduates. The exhibition includes emerging artists from area colleges such as Maryland Institute College of Art and The University of Maryland College Park. Since 2008 this program has continually brought recent graduates together to make new connections and present special selections from their graduate exhibitions. According to MAP’s former Program Advisory Chair, Cara Ober, “After achieving their Masters the next most important step for young artists is their professional debut in a reputable professional gallery.” Since 2008, Young Blood has provided a meritorious exhibition experience for over 45 artists.

The selected artworks use serial repetition as a strategy for showcasing how one action, repeated over time, may accumulate, spread, or evolve into another version of its original self. The show situates repetition as an aesthetic arena within which artists can show difference within a shared experience, or pursue its opposite, replicating an image in perpetuity until it is emptied of meaning. Read through this critical lens, the works produce a variety of affects– pacifying, enraging, seducing, neutralizing, and leaving the viewer on inconclusive ground. The show focuses on repetition and replication, and to recognize how a system might evolve into a new version of itself over time.

Mel Leipzig has been concerned with the figure, painted directly from life, for over 40 years. As They Are: Portraits by Mel Leipzig focuses on the characteristic informality of his subject against a backdrop of architectural detail and highly skewed perspective. CEPA Gallery, in partnership with Dean Brownrout Modern/Contemporary is presenting an exhibition and sale of photographic artwork by artist Hollis Frampton. The event takes place June 20-September 5, 2015 at CEPA Gallery, 617 Main Street, Buffalo, New York.
The exhibition and sale is the first comprehensive survey of the late artist’s print work in over 30 years. Many pieces in the exhibit have never been presented in a gallery setting.Hollis Frampton (1936-1984) is an avant-garde icon—a pioneering filmmaker, art theorist, and photographer. He was on the SUNY Buffalo Department of Media Study faculty from 1973-1984.

White Columns is proud to present a solo exhibition by the New York-based artist Kate Manheim. Best known for her work as an actress and performer, Manheim began her career as an artist. Manheim’s exhibition at White Columns features the complete cycle of more than 50 individual paintings produced in the mid 1990s made on found cardboard supports. Works from this series have been shown only once before at the Court House Gallery at Anthology Film Archives, New York in 1996.

Artists Vero Majano, DJ Brown Amy (Amy Martinez), and Kari Orvik reinterpret the album covers of East Side Story, Volumes 1-12 through a re-staging and re-imagining of queer inclusion within the traditionally heterosexual public image of lowrider culture.

Alec Soth is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and São Paulo Biennials. In 2008, a large survey exhibition of Alec’s work was exhibited at Jeu de Paume in Paris and Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland. In 2010, the Walker Art Center produced a large survey exhibition of his work titled From Here To There. Alec’s first monograph, Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published by Steidl in 2004 to critical acclaim.

San Francisco-based artist Amy M. Ho uses video projections and/or architectural manipulations to explore light and spatial relationships. Red Rooms is an immersive, hyper-artificial environment that envelops the viewer and transforms the sense of space by projected light and shadows. Red Rooms is a two-channel video projection that was created by the artist photographing two views of a miniature architectural model lit in two different ways – one from in front and another from behind.

Musée Minuscule
Art in General is pleased to present Myopia’s Toil with Katie Torn in the Musée Minuscule.
New York-based artist Katie Torn integrates animation, 3D computer graphics, and video to model virtually simulated scenes out of the detritus of internet and consumer culture. Collecting elements available online, Torn’s digital assemblages carry traces of web browsing histories. Referencing the Modernist traditions of Cubism and Futurism in her avatars and abstractions, fantasy worlds and sci-fi simulations are conflated with 20th century investigations into pictorial space.

This exhibition culminates a body of work Olivia Martin Moore began in Berlin. Moore incorporates ephemera–such as poster advertisements and postcards collected while in Berlin–with traditional sculpture materials to create an immersive audio-visual installation. Moore collaborated with sound artist Zac Traeger to synthesize visual and aural colors and textures. The sculptures transform humble materials into an atmospheric portrait of two cities and the space between them and, at the same time, reflect on the history of the German Democratic Republic.

CEPA Gallery is pleased to present T-Shirt on TV an exhibition by John Overton Burns, Erich Haneberg, and Dan Carey at CEPA’s Big Orbit Project Space. T-shirt on TV depicts the influence of pop culture on the works of artists John Overton Burns, Dan Carey and Erich Haneberg. All three artists use 1980’s iconography as the subject matter in their vibrant, quirky and somewhat comical salutes to TV personalities, game shows and movies.

PATRICK SCHMIDT. A site-specific installation using digitally generated drawing on colored vinyl or cloth tape. Schmidt uses pattern as metaphor for economic, social, and ethnic identifiers. He explores the ideas of space by considering how we perceive, interact, and experience paintings and drawings within a specific context. The structure and format of the current works explore relationships in-between defined disciplines while creating a space in which to play. Digitalization adds a utilitarian element to his work, thus equalizing the existing classifications. Much of the work is interactive in that the viewer has to move around the work in some way to fully engage. For the drawing installation(s) as the viewer walks into the space they walk into the work itself by walking on the drawing. His primary research interests focus on juxtapositions, how color affects perception, material, patterns as cultural motifs, and how technology is changing visual culture.

Transformer presents Interspatial, a group show curated and organized by Quota. Artists Rachel Schmidt, Johab Silva, and Levester Williams explore the concept of space, real and imagined, and how it can define, confine or spark transformation. The works exhibited respond to changing or unfamiliar landscapes, restrictive environments, population density and adapting to multiple facets of modernity. Founded by Dawne Langford and Avi Gupta, Quota is a curatorial collaboration dedicated to broadening cultural diversity in public discourse around artistic creation and representation.

CEPA Gallery’s Big Orbit Project Space will present Felice Koenig: Drawing Together curated by CS1 Curatorial Projects.
An opening reception will take place at Big Orbit Project Space on Friday, April 24th from 7-10pm. The gallery will be open for drawing sessions during the day prior to the artist reception. Over three weekends in the spring, Koenig will draw in real time with a series of participants, using the simple tools of youth – paper and colored markers. Sitting opposite one another and working simultaneously on the same piece of paper, the goal is to play as a means of creating news bonds. In this way, drawing becomes social practice.

Rachel Domm’s Window Diary is a series of 365 drawings of windows for every day of 2014. Throughout the year, the artist drew the view from the window of her apartment in Brooklyn and from her numerous travels — from Sweden to Miami to Cameroon to The Åland Islands to India. In all, there are 15 different cities from 4 different continents chronicled in the book, making it a travel journal as well. It records the change in season from snowy days in January to rainy days in April and hot days in August. While the scenes are objective, the view is personal and contemplative, even though it looks outside instead of inside.

Yeah, No, I Mean It: Time, Situation, Dexterity is a three-day performance art symposium hosted at Charlotte Street’s la Esquina Gallery on the evenings of April 16th, 17th, and 18th from 7-9pm. Each night, local performance artists will generate live work within the gallery, alongside nationally recognized visiting performance artists. These performances will range in aesthetics, concepts, and duration: from the highly visual and loud, to the quiet and contemplative. This symposium is designed to highlight and expand the local and national conversation about contemporary performance art practice, through three days of making and discussing the local and national ecology of emerging performance art. Yeah, No, I Mean It: Time, Situation, Dexterity is curated by Kansas City-based artist Jessica Borusky.

Rampleman’s work frequently showcases strong female personalities—women who are simultaneously aberrant and superhuman—who challenge the common clichés of masculinity and femininity and who often assume roles typically associated with men. White Columns in collaboration with Galerie Susanne Zander / Delmes & Zander, Cologne + Berlin, presents the American debut of “Margret: Chronicle of an Affair – May 1969 to December 1970″, an extraordinary collection of found materials relating to a private affair conducted between a German businessman and his secretary in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
SF Camerawork and Galería de la Raza present Existe lo que tiene nombre: Contemporary Photography in Mexico. Organized by San Francisco-based curator Sergio De La Torre and Tijuana-based curator Javier Ramírez Limón, the exhibition will be on view at SF Camerawork from April 2 through May 23, 2015. A 200-page catalog will accompany the exhibition. Comprised of over 50 photographic and video works produced within the past decade, this is the US debut for many of the exhibiting artists.

Midway Contemporary Art presents an exhibition of Mitchell Syrop’s new work, It is better to shine than to reflect. The exhibition, as Midway Contemporary Art describes it, “brings together a new installation of his high school yearbook series from the 1970s with his photographic work from the early 1980s that was influenced by the advertising strategies and mechanisms of that period. Syrop began combining text and image in the mid-1970s following his move from New York to Los Angeles. His interest in public advertising developed as a young student in New York, and became an explicit focus in his work once he started graduate school at CalArts where he gained access to film and image reproduction technology. The availability of such technology, combined with the scale and breadth of LA’s advertising and television industries, was of particular importance to Syrop. In 1976 he created a short film, Watch It, Think It, that was 6 seconds long and was eventually edited for commercial broadcast on a local television station. The short sequence portrays a woman smiling and drinking from a glass of water within rapidly shifting graphic transitions. A voiceover repeats, “Watch it… Think It… Watch it… Think it”. Like some of the other works on view, the ambiguous nature of this pseudo commercial allows for numerous readings. Disconnected from any product, this work links itself to presentational modes at use in advertising.”

Creative Time in partnership Weeksville Heritage Foundation in Brooklyn, New York has created a month long walkable exhibition entitled Funk, God, Jazz, and Medicine: Black Radical Brooklyn. The exhibition, which is comprised of four community-based commissions by artists Xenobia Bailey, Simone Leigh, Otabenga Jones & Associates, and Bradford Young will be closing on October 12th. From the Creative Time website: “Black Radical Brooklyn launched from the site of Weeksville, a Brooklyn community established by free and formerly enslaved Black citizens 11 years after abolition in New York State. Black Radical Brooklyn drew inspiration not only from this story- achieving self-determination through the claiming and holding of a neighborhood- but also from radical local battles for land and dignity from the 1960s to today.”

Once again Printed Matter hosted the hugely successful NY Art Book Fair this weekend at MoMA PS1. The event boasted over 35,000 visitors in its four day run. This year the fair hosted NORWAY FOCUS: KUNSTNERBØKER, a curated selection of 23 Norwegian booksellers, institutions, artists and independent publishers. From the NY Art Book Fair website “This year’s NY Art Book Fair includes an ever-growing variety of exhibitors – from the zinesters in (XE)ROX & PAPER + SCISSORS and the Small Press Dome representing publishing at its most innovative and affordable, to rare and antiquarian dealers offering out-of-print books and ephemera from art and artist book history.” Beyond its numerous exhibitors, the fair also hosted a DJ set by JD Samson, and live sets by Thurston Moore & James Nares and Gang Gang Dance on the steps of PS1.

Now open at Art in General is Total Body Conditioning, an exhibition by Mika Tajima. As Art in General describes it, the exhibition is “comprised of three scenes—display, work, and fitness—that invoke technologies developed to control and affect the body. These are techniques that shape bodily experience of time and space, taking the human body as a target of power. The works in the exhibition include hot tub painting objects, a series of abstract woven textile portraits, and transparent paintings set to changing ambient lighting and sound sequences. Each scene in the exhibition traces the management of the body in different spaces and temporal contexts from factory assembly lines to therapeutic “after work” locations.”

Locust Projects presents Sunday in the Park, featuring Sarah Crowner in collaboration with Sari Carel, and Exile Books, opening on Saturday, September 13th, in Miami, Florida. From the Locust Project website, “Hung with colorful voile curtains and painted backdrops alluding to park-like landscapes, the installation takes its cues from stage design. While the title refers to a fictional work of theater, Crowner’s work focuses on the material aspects of stagecraft rather than performance itself.”

On view from Saturday, September 13th, until Saturday, October 25th, 2014, is Total Body Conditioning, an exhibition featuring Mika Tajima at Art in General in New York City. The exhibition is composed of three scenes that explore the management of the body in “different spaces and temporal contexts from factory assembly lines to therapeutic ‘after work’ locations”. More from the Art in General website, “Total Body Conditioning refers to the complete investment of the body, taking the Greek practice ‘to care for oneself’ into the Foucauldian register of discipline and control exacted on the self—where individual practices of freedom are intertwined with modes of domination.”

Opening on Saturday, September 6th at DiverseWorks in Houston, Texas, is Pepe Mar: Parco dei Mostri. Mar’s works draws from a collection of diverse cultures, having been born in Mexico and raised in border towns, to attending the California College of the Arts and Florida International University in Miami, where he’s currently based. For his project with DiverseWorks, Mar “will create a large-scale, immersive installation that brings his sculptures to life.” The exhibition will be on view until Saturday, October 25th, 2014.

Theory of Survival: Fabrications will be on view from Friday, September 5th until Saturday, October 25th, 2014, at Southern Exposure in San Francisco, California. From the Southern Exposure website, “Fabrications is a pop-up bazaar drawing inspiration from a traditional Persian marketplace. Taraneh Hemami, in this latest iteration of her Theory of Survivalproject, invites twelve California-based Iranian artists to join her in engaging with Iranian political and cultural historical moments, exploring decades of collective activism and revolutionary actions inside Iran and in its larger diaspora.” Participating artists include Morehshin Allahyari, Ali Dadgar, Ala Ebtekar, Amir H. Promised Land, an exhibition hosting twelve east-coast based artists responding to current national issues as inspired by Asbury Park, New Jersey, will come down on Sunday, September 7th. The exhibition, put on by Transformer, featured Jane Carver, Kevin Darmanie, Dahlia Elsayed, Alison Kuo, Mike Richison, Raul Romero, Jessica Segall, Crystal Stokowski, Scot Szegeski, Lisa Marie Thalhammer, Tang, and John Vigg.

On Friday, September 4th, Nick Kline will install a window presentation at Printed Matter, Inc. The installation, a combination of photographs and prints, as well as artist’ publications and a neon sign, will be on view until September 12th. The presentation “emerges out of two recent collaborative book projects – To Be Alive and Forget This and he – both of which engage themes around boyhood and loss.”

Part 1 of an exhibition of the 2014 Workspace Program at Dieu Donné will open in New York on Tuesday, August 26th, with a reception on September 4th, from 6-8PM. The Workspace Program allows emerging New York state based artists to explore the art of papermaking and produce a body of work. Part 1 will feature artists Joseph Hart and Tamara Zahaykevich and will be on view until October 3rd. Part 2 will feature Emily Noelle Lambert and Lael Marshall, and will open on Monday, November 10th and close Saturday, January 10, 2015, with a reception on November 20th from 6-8PM.

Moment Art presents (A) Rake’s Progress, an exhibition of Kathleen White’s polymorphichrome drawings produced in the summer of 2009 in remembrance of her late brother, Chris White. Showing from Friday, August 8th to Sunday, August 31st, the exhibition also features Sound Texts, represented as recordings of their production on the typewriter, but performed on site by the readers on the last day of the show.

Carving through Borders, an exhibition of 13 oversized woodblock prints will be on view at Galería de la Raza in San Francisco from Saturday, August 2nd to Friday, September 19th, 2014. The woodblocks, commissioned by CultureStrike, “illustrate various aspects of migration with a local, national, or worldwide scope”.

a/wake in the water, a film, video, and new media exhibition, will be on view at the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts from Thursday, August 14th, to Sunday, November 9th, 2014. From the MoCADA website, the exhibition utilizes “found footage, staged reenactments, and performative paralysis to expose the systematic neglect and lingering repercussions Black communities face in the aftermath of disaster.” Additional narratives “explore impending dystopic and apocalyptic futures to further analyze the state of environmental justice as it functions within the Diaspora.”

Construction of the US Pavilion at EXPO ’70 Osaka–a Japanese-language documentary film with English sub-titles–details the construction and inflation of the radically-engineered pneumatic dome designed for the US Pavilion at EXPO ’70 Osaka.”
Vagaries of the Commons, Artspace
Artspace, a gallery in downtown New Haven, opens “Vagaries of the Commons”, an exhibition curated by Sarah Fritchey. The exhibition will be on view from July 25th to September 13th, with a two-day conference on September 12th and 13th and with an accompanying performance series. The show reflects on four specific categories of human rights questions that artists address practicing in and around New Haven including: the material commons, the knowledge commons, the aesthetic commons, and the affective commons.

Artists Michael Mandiberg, Amy Whitaker, and Caroline Woolard will be in conversation about their new volume The Social Life of Artistic Property on July 24th, from 6-8pm at Printed Matter. From their website: “What happens when twelve artists gather to discuss the relationship between art and property? In twenty meetings over two and a half years, the core group of Pablo Helguera, Michael Mandiberg, William Powhida, Amy Whitaker and Caroline Woolard birthed this provocative volume. The group produced three pieces of writing about experiments in group living and three proposals for the future of artistic property, including initiatives that reimagine studio space, living space, and artwork.”
E:11 CODA, Transformer's Exercises For Emerging Artists at Artisphere
E11: CODA, a collaborative exhibition between Alex Braden, Emily Francisco, E. Jane, Ian McDermott and lead mentor and curator Ryan Holladay, opens on July 24th from 7-9pm at Artisphere in Arlington, Virginia. The Washignton, DC based organization Transformer joins with Artisphere for an event that marks the culmination of the 11th season of Transformer’s Exercises for Emerging Artists program.

Opening June 7th Artists Space will present Living with Pop. A Reproduction of Capitalist Realism. The exhibition includes Manfred Kuttner, Konrad Lueg, Sigmar Polke, and Gerhard Richter, with contributions by Christopher Williams. From the Artists Space website:
“Living with Pop. A Reproduction of Capitalist Realism documents the actions by Kuttner, Lueg, Polke and Richter that took place between 1963 and 1966 under the auspices of Capitalist Realism, and concludes with an account of the term’s strategic use by gallerist René Block in the late 1960s in Berlin. Further, sections of this exhibition are dedicated to the influence of Fluxus in the Rhineland as an important precursor to Capitalist Realism.”

On view through May 31st Atlanta Contemporary Art Center presents Simone Leigh: Gone South, the first major solo exhibition of artist in the context of the South. The New York-based artist is adept at forming and firing ceramics to create singular objects and assemblages that range from the ornamental to the ominous. She consistently investigates the female body as a repository of lived experiences: pleasure and pain, motherhood, and various contributions to domestic life and cultural agency. Gone South combines previously exhibited site-specific installations and performance-based video alongside new sculptures that take advantage of the proportions of the galleries:

Opening May 24th, MOCA Tucson will welcome IUD: Bakerman. Individually, Lizzi Bougatos, Sadie Laska, and Spencer Sweeney operate as visual artists and musicians. All three are painters who have shown at various New York and international galleries and museums, and all are involved with experimental musical projects. Bougatos is notable as the leader of the long-running electronic neo-psychedelic band Gang Gang Dance, and Sweeney is a DJ and part-owner of Santos Party House in New York. Laska is gaining significant critical attention for her paintings and works on paper, shown recently at NADA and Kerry Schuss. At MOCA Tucson, IUD will occupy the East Wing galleries and turn them into temporary experimental studio space where they will produce installations and paintings from both traditional and scavenged materials that have become IUD’s hallmark production M.O.:

In conjunction with Artists Space’s current exhibition Macho Man, Tell It To My Heart: Collected by Julie Ault (on view through Feb20th) the organization has a full line of film programming. The next program on Jan 16th at 7pm will feature interviews of Lucy Lippard, Nancy Spero, Lyn Blumenthal and Kate Horsfield. From Artists Space’s website:
“Lyn Blumenthal and Kate Horsfield, in their founding Video Data Bank series, interviewed writer, critic, feminist, and art historian Lucy Lippard soon after the publication of her essential book on conceptual art, Six Years: the dematerialization of the art object from 1966 to 1972. The book remains a touchstone of extraordinary scope, while these videos, keeping with the medium’s purpose-driven roots, concentrate on Lippard’s politics. Blumenthal and Horsfield were art students themselves when they founded VDB with this interview series, and were fierce fans in their deployment of voices to create a validating discourse of women practitioners. Blumenthal and Horsfield’s 1982 interview with Nancy Spero begins with her decision to allow political events to determine what she chose to paint, and why. Spero, along with her partner Leon Golub, whose work appears in the exhibition, had a unique place in the factionalized 1980s New York art world, sustaining vibrantly engaged practices in a scene riven with competing agendas and freighted with political, philosophical, and market stakes.”

SF Camerawork in San Francisco recently announced the appointment of Heather Snider as its new Executive Director. Heather comes to the organization with a wide range of expertise and experiences in the photography and art community. She has held director positions at Vision Gallery and Scott Nichols Gallery. Recently, her work has been devoted to freelance writing, curating, and consulting on contemporary photography. She is very familiar with SF Camerawork as she served on the organization’s Board from 2005 to 2010.
During the month of January, Heather will be working closely with Chuck Mobley, the organization’s current Director to ensure a smooth transition, taking full charge on February 1st. They would like to express thanks to Chuck and Gallery Manager Brent Nuñez for the amount of work they have accomplished in the last six months readying the gallery, the archives, and the organization’s daily systems for the transition.

Interesting exhibition on view now at Art in General featuring the work of artist Jill Magid. Quoted from Art in General’s website:
“What does it mean for a corporation to own an artist’s legacy? This question forms the core of Jill Magid’s latest work Woman With Sombrero, the first part of an ongoing multi-media project entitled The Barragán Archives, which examines the legacy of Mexican architect and Pritzker Prize-winner Luis Barragán (1902–1988).
For Art in General’s exhibition, based on Barragán’s personal archive and library that Magid studied in Mexico City, complex personal and historical situations are explored through furniture, sculpture, photographs, and film referencing the architect’s home and life – as well as an audio recording with slides relating to the architect’s intimate correspondence with numerous women. Refused access at this time to the professional archive, now owned by Vitra and located in Switzerland, the artist instead inserts gestures and invitations to make space for that which she does not know and cannot see. Taking the law as a raw material of the work, Magid frames books as readymades, avoiding copy infringement. Ideas of obsession and ownership, versus authorship and preserving legacy, collide in this investigation.
Along with the vast majority of his architecture, Barragán’s personal archive remains in Mexico under the guardianship of the Fundación de Arquitectura Tapatía Luis Barragán. His professional archive—including the rights to the architect’s name and work—was acquired in 1995 by Swiss furniture company Vitra under the auspices of the newly founded Barragan Foundation located in Birsfelden, Switzerland. The foundation is directed by Federica Zanco, architect, author, and the wife of Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman of the Board of Vitra.
In this project, Magid examines what it means for a major part of Barragán’s heritage to be outside of Mexico and to have limited access. Exploring the intersection of the psychological and the judicial, national identity and repatriation, international property rights and copyright law, Magid re-imagines and re-presents material from the archives based on its legal status. In the process, she explores her role as an artist and a researcher in relation to the roles of Barragán and Zanco.”

Warhol Initiative Grantees Artists Space, Participant Inc, Printed Matter, Triple Canopy, and White Columns in partnership with The Kitchen, and Light Industry, have developed Common Practice New York, a recently formed advocacy group that fosters research and discussions on the role of small-scale arts institutions in New York City.
Common Practice New York draws inspiration from Common Practice, London, an affiliated advocacy group working for the recognition and fostering of the small-scale contemporary visual arts sector in England, and founder of the Common Practice Network.
Founded over the course of several meetings beginning in 2012, Common Practice New York aims to collectively embody the question What is our common practice and why do we value it? Each group claims certain benefits to its small scale: sustainability not at the expense of quality; long-term relationships with artists and publics; less compromised access to artwork; and horizontal networks and collaboration. Yet factors such as the embrace of larger institutions to new art, ever-adapting commercial environments, novel forms of social interaction, and the rising costs of living in New York have all created unprecedented challenges for small-scale institutions.

On May 1st Machine Project and East of Borneo will team up to present a special screening of Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe.
The short documentary features Herzog fulfilling the bet that if his friend Errol Morris completed his film on the subject of pet cemeteries—what would be Morris’s debut release “Gates of Heaven” (1979)—Herzog would eat his shoe. The film follows Herzog as he cooks his own Clarks boots in duck fat and garlic with the help of Alice Waters at Chez Panisse. Following the film, refreshments will be served:

Second Street Gallery, an established and well-regarded nonprofit contemporary art space in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a new curator.
Second Street Gallery (SSG) was central Virginia’s first artist-run alternative arts space, and is today one of the longest established nonprofit organizations in the country focused solely on the art and ideas of our time. Since its founding in 1973, SSG has served the community with continuous exhibition programming, and is recognized as one of the leading nonprofit proponents of contemporary art in the Mid-Atlantic region. SSG is one of only 64 organizations to be included in The Warhol Initiative, an invitational program designed to bolster the organizational capacity of small and mid-sized, artist-centered organizations across the country. Established by a group of artists affiliated with the University of Virginia and the local community, SSG is committed to providing Charlottesville and central Virginia with access to the best in contemporary art and artists, and to fostering an active and open appreciation of this art by engaging, promoting and educating around the ideas and issues underlying it.
The gallery is located inside the City Center for Contemporary Arts (CCCA) building in downtown Charlottesville. Completed in 2003, the CCCA also houses two other non-profit groups, Live Arts (a community theater) and Light House (a youth media organization). Since its incorporation, SSG has been governed by a volunteer Board of Directors (12-20 individuals) and managed by a professional staff. SSG presents 10-12 separate exhibitions each year. In addition, SSG presents a full calendar of related educational and outreach activities that complement its exhibition season. The gallery is supported by memberships, donations from the local community, sponsorships, and grants from foundations and the state.
SSG’s mission is to enliven Virginia through access to the best in contemporary art and artists and to inspire new ways of thinking, seeing, and doing. To this end, SSG strategically promotes contemporary artists through the presentation of their work in a professional gallery setting, and encourages an appreciation of contemporary art and culture by educating the public through exhibitions, lectures, workshops, classes, tours, and publications.
The Position
The Curator is primarily responsible for leading the artistic programming with a clear sense of SSG’s history and mission to bring the best of contemporary art and artists to Central Virginia. The curator is also a passionate advocate for the contemporary arts in general, and the gallery in particular.
This is a part time position, 10 – 12 days per month. The Curator reports to the Gallery Director. Salary is negotiable based on experience, and the gallery has a flexible working environment.

*SSG also promotes a national call for artist submissions via ads and its website, the curator is assisted in reviewing these proposals by an Artists Review Panel (ARP). The ARP consists of 8-10 artists and arts professionals representing the Central Virginia region, and also individuals who participate in the national contemporary art dialogue as exhibiting artists, critics, curators, and art historians.

The first annual LA Art Book Fair on Feb 1-3rd 2013, organized by Printed Matter Inc., and hosted by The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA proved to be a huge success. Free and open to the public, the LA Art Book Fair is a unique event featuring artists’ books, art catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines presented by presses, booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers from twenty-one countries. Over 16,000 visitors came out to see the work of 220 publishers and individual artists. Exhibitors of the fair created installations, hosted performances, and many presented brand new publications which debuted at the fair. Exhibitors joined the fair from around the world, from Tokyo to Athens, from Oslo to Buenos Aires. Several Warhol Initiative Organizations were invited and participated as exhibitors in the fair including: Fillip, East of Borneo, LACE, X-Tra, Cabinet, Dieu Donne Press, Primary Information and of course Printed Matter.

Beyond the amazing number of books, the fair featured 4 exhibitions, including Zine Masters of the Universe a show of artist books by Raymond Pettibon, Dash Snow, Ari Marcopolous, and Marc Gonzales. The fair also had a number of programming events which complemented the fair, including; a guerrilla art radio station KCHUNG broadcasting interviews with artists and publishers through the fair, a Mike Kelley reading room, artists talks by Ben Jones, Dan Nadel, and a lecture by Chris Boot, Executive Director of the Aperture Foundation. Fritz Haeg also offered yoga classes and book club discussions at the Sundown Schoolhouse.

The LA Art Book Fair follows suit to Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair held at MoMA PS1. 25,000 visitors attended the past year’s NY Art Book Fair which hosted 283 exhibitors. Both fairs are offered free to the public, and the project’s growing success means that Printed Matter’s organizational mission of disseminating and fostering the appreciation of artist books is being realized to a bigger extent than it ever has before!
